Offered at no price whatsoever by the GCH Guitar Accademy, this application comes in handy when you don’t have a traditional metronome or if you want to replace your traditional metronome with something else. Pretty much all you need to know about the application is spelled out in its name: Free Metronome.

To install Free Metronome, you will have to download a 6.3MB archive. Run the executable inside the archive and follow the on-screen instructions presented by a setup wizard to get Free Metronome up and running. The minimum system requirements for running the application are: Pentium 233 processor, 16MB of RAM, video card capable of 800x600 resolution, 16-bit sound card.

Instructions on what you need to do to start using Free Metronome are presented to the left on the application’s interface: “to start, click a speed number.” Several numbers corresponding to a different tempo are displayed as a speed dial to the right. Click a number and the application will get on with its job. Beneath this dial there are buttons for different time signatures and a slider for adjusting the volume.

By presenting the interface, I also presented the functionality Free Metronome has to offer. Click on a number to start the playback, use the slider to adjust the volume, use the buttons to switch between several time signatures, hit the stop button to end the playback. If you have any problems, take a look at the UserGuide.pdf file that’s inside the Free Metronome installation directory (the default directory is C:Program FilesGCH Guitar AcademyUserGuide.pdf).

As the name so accurately points out, Free Metronome is freeware. You can use the application for as long as you want and you don't have to part with your money.

This simple and free tool can prove to be a nice alternative to a traditional metronome.

Pros

Free Metronome’s system requirements are so low that it will run on any PC. There’s a handy User Guide in case you have any problems using the application (you shouldn’t have any since the interface is very straightforward). This application is freeware.

Cons

None that I could think of.
